Pride & Prejudice comparison

On this gallery page I thought it would be fun to compare some images from these television adaptations of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice (the 1980 Masterpiece Theatre and the 1995 A&E BBC Colin Firth versions). You'll have to forgive me, I created this page in the middle of the night, so the lack of sleep perhaps gave some of my comments more of an irreverant edge! Also, please excuse the length of this page. I definitely got carried away. What can I say? It was fun. Oh, and obviously I have too much time on my hands.

To see more images from the 1980 David Rintoul / Elizabeth Garvie Pride and Prejudice, view its photo gallery. To read the general comparison of both TV mini-series, go to General Pride and Prejudice Overview.

Icy and cool, Darcy deals with rejection.

Those eyes express his feelings about being thus rejected.

In awe of Pemberly.

Equally in awe of Pemberly.

A pensive Darcy.

Pensive? More like befuddled.

Sweet Mr. Bingley.

Equally sweet Mr. Bingley.

"The Letter."

Why, look. He's giving her a letter.

Shocked to discover Lizzy at Pemberly.

He's shocked! Shocked, I tell you!

There's a lots of time spent reading (and writing) letters.

There's lots of time spent with Darcy wet, half-dressed, and in need of a shave.

I suspect it's just a painted-over photograph, but at least it looks like him.

With all that Darcy money, you'd think they'd at least be able to afford to hire a decent artist.

Lydia is a little ninny.

Lydia is still a little ninny. (Seen with Wickham.)

Aunt & Uncle Gardiner.

With the Aunt and Uncle.

A serene Jane.

This Jane is the epitome of serene.

Mr. Bennet & Lizzy.

Discussion with dad.

Happy couple.

Another happy couple.

Mr. & Mrs. Collins.

The happy Collins couple.

Another happy couple (The Bennets).

Mom and Pop.

Lizzy & Miss Darcy.

He's not going to intimidate her, by gum!

So, you approve, huh?

"I will conquer this." And getting all sweaty while fencing seems to help.

Mr. Collins (1995). Whoa—bad combover, dude.

Commonly known as "The Look."

Lady Catherine (1995). Yikes. This lady is scary.

Why, I wouldn't dream of intimidating you!

The snob sisters (1995).

The big rejection scene.

She tolerates dancing with him.

Miss Eliza.
